How the world keeps time, and why conversion is needed.
What are time zones?
Time zones are areas of the globe that share one standard time. In theory there are 24 main zones, each about 15 degrees of longitude wide; in practice borders follow countries and regions. Every zone is defined by its offset from UTC (Coordinated Universal Time).
UTC — the global reference
UTC is the yardstick for every other zone: New York sits at UTC−5, London at UTC+0 and Tokyo at UTC+9 in winter. To convert, find the gap between two offsets and apply it.
Daylight Saving Time (DST)
Many places move their clocks forward in spring and back in autumn, so their UTC offset changes during the year — New York is UTC−5 in winter and UTC−4 under DST. The converter applies these shifts for you.
The International Date Line
Cross enough zones and the calendar date changes. Late Monday evening in New York is already Tuesday afternoon in Tokyo, and the converter flags every date change.

Popular Time Zone Conversions
A quick reference for common time zone pairs.
US time zones
The mainland US uses four zones an hour apart: Eastern (ET), Central (CT), Mountain (MT) and Pacific (PT). 3 PM in New York is 12 PM in Los Angeles.
US to Europe
London is usually 5 hours ahead of New York (briefly 4 when the two switch DST on different dates), so a 9 AM New York meeting is 2 PM in London.
US to Asia
Tokyo is 14 hours ahead of New York in winter (13 during US daylight saving time). An 8 AM Monday call in New York lands at 10 PM Monday in Tokyo.
Europe to Asia
In winter, Singapore is 8 hours ahead of London and Tokyo is 8 hours ahead of Paris — one hour less while Europe is on summer time.
Time Zone Converter FAQ
Answers to common questions about the Time Zone Converter.
Set the date and time, choose the zone it belongs to, then choose the zone you want it in. The matching local time appears straight away, along with any change of date.
UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) is the reference every time zone is measured from — New York is UTC−5 in winter, Tokyo is UTC+9. Converting between two zones simply means applying the difference between their UTC offsets.
Yes. It relies on your browser's built-in time-zone database, which includes the current daylight saving rules for every zone listed, so DST shifts are applied automatically.
Often. 11 PM in New York in winter is 1 PM the next day in Tokyo, 14 hours ahead (noon during US daylight saving time). Any date change is shown clearly in the result.
More than 20 major zones: every mainland US zone plus Hawaii and Alaska, the main European and Asian zones, Sydney, Auckland and UTC — enough for most business and travel needs.
Yes. Enter a proposed meeting time in your zone, choose your colleague's zone, and you'll see exactly what time it will be for them — no more mix-ups across borders.
For everyday conversions they show the same time. UTC is maintained by atomic clocks, while GMT is a time zone based on the sun over Greenwich; the UK uses GMT in winter and BST (UTC+1) in summer.
