02

Set End Time

Enter the end time. If the span runs past midnight, tick "Crosses Midnight".

03

Get Difference

Press Calculate to see the time difference in hours, minutes, seconds and decimal hours.

04

Use Results

Take the decimal hours for payroll, or keep the HH:MM:SS value for schedules and reports.

What Is a Time Difference Calculator?

A focused tool for the gap between two clock readings.

The concept of time difference

A Time Difference Calculator measures how far apart two moments on the clock are. Where a full duration calculator works across dates, this one is tuned for same-day time gaps — the length of a shift, a lesson, a meeting or a journey.

The sum itself is short: End Time − Start Time = Difference. It gets awkward by hand once AM and PM are involved or the span passes midnight, and those are exactly the cases this calculator takes care of.

Handling overnight differences

When the end looks "earlier" than the start — 10 PM to 6 AM — plain subtraction gives a negative number. The calculator adds 24 hours to fix that and reports the true overnight duration of 8 hours.

Decimal hours for payroll

Each answer also comes as decimal hours. 7 hours 45 minutes is shown as 7.75, a number you can multiply by an hourly rate without converting anything.

Time Difference Calculator FAQ

Answers to common questions about the Time Difference Calculator.

Enter a start time and an end time. The tool subtracts the start from the end and shows the gap in hours, minutes and seconds, converting AM and PM for you along the way.

Yes. Tick "Crosses Midnight" when the end time belongs to the next day. 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM then comes out as the correct 8 hours.

Yes. Times can be entered in 12-hour form with AM/PM or in 24-hour form, depending on your device. Everything is converted to 24-hour time before the subtraction, which keeps the answer exact.

They describe the same idea — how much time separates two points. "Time difference" usually means the gap between two clock readings on the same day or overnight, which is what this tool is built for. For spans covering several dates, use the Time Duration Calculator on the homepage.

Yes. Every result lists the gap as HH:MM:SS, as decimal hours, and as total minutes and total seconds side by side.

Yes. The decimal hours value drops straight into a payroll spreadsheet: 7 hours 45 minutes appears as 7.75, ready to be multiplied by an hourly rate.

This tool measures gaps on one clock. To compare two places, first convert one time into the other zone — the Time Zone Converter does that — and then measure the difference here.
