How Time Card Calculation Works
The weekly time card sum, broken into four steps.
Enter Clock-In Times
Add the start time for each working day with the picker, in HH:MM format.
Enter Clock-Out Times
Add the end time for each day; normal days and overnight shifts are both supported.
Add Break Times
Enter the break duration per day in minutes — lunch and rest breaks come off that day's total.

What Is a Time Card Calculation?
The arithmetic behind employee time tracking.
Time card basics
A time card — often called a timesheet — records an employee's hours for a pay period. Every day lists a clock-in time, a clock-out time and any break deductions, and the days are added to give the week.
Each day follows Daily Hours = Clock Out − Clock In − Breaks. In at 9:00 AM, out at 5:30 PM, with a 30-minute lunch, gives 8 net hours.
Decimal hours for payroll
Payroll needs decimal hours, not HH:MM: 8 hours 30 minutes is 8.50 decimal hours, which can be multiplied straight by an hourly rate.
Overtime on time cards
Hours beyond 40 in the week — the FLSA benchmark — are overtime. Some employers also count daily overtime for any day over 8 hours, and this card highlights both.
When to Use Time Card Calculation
Who relies on accurate time card tracking.

Keep accurate time cards through split shifts, weekend work and holiday overtime.
Freelancers
Track work hours per project and convert them to decimal hours to invoice clients precisely.
Time Card Calculation Examples
Three realistic time card scenarios, totalled.
Standard 5-day workweek
9:00 AM to 5:30 PM with a 30-minute lunch, five days a week: 8.0 hours a day × 5 = 40.0 hours, no overtime.
Overtime workweek
The same week plus Saturday 8:00 AM – 2:00 PM (6 hours) makes 46.0 hours, including 6.0 hours of overtime.
Variable shift week
Mon 10h, Tue 8h, Wed 6h, Thu 9h, Fri 8h adds up to 41.0 hours, of which 1.0 hour is overtime.
Time Card Calculation FAQ
Answers to common questions about Time Card Calculation.
For each day, subtract the clock-in time from the clock-out time and remove the break. Then add the days together. This tool does both steps from the times you enter and shows the week in HH:MM and in decimal hours.
Yes. Type each day's break in minutes and it is subtracted from that day automatically — an 8-hour span with a 30-minute lunch becomes 7.5 net hours.
The daily totals are added for the week. Anything above 40 hours, or the threshold you set, is reported separately as overtime.
Use the time pickers (HH:MM). Depending on your device they show 12-hour or 24-hour time — 09:00 and 17:30 both work.
The card covers one 7-day week. For a two-week period, complete each week separately and add the totals; overtime should be checked week by week.
Yes — free, with no download or sign-up. Your hours are calculated in the browser and are never sent to a server.
Divide the minutes by 60: 15 minutes is .25, 30 minutes is .50, 45 minutes is .75 and 20 minutes is about .33. So a day of 7 hours 45 minutes goes on the time card as 7.75 hours.
