What Is an Age Calculator?

How age computation works.

How age is calculated

An Age Calculator measures the time since a birth date using calendar subtraction — whole years first, then months, then days — so uneven months and leap years are respected.

Age goes up at midnight on the birthday. Someone born on March 15, 1995 is 30 years, 11 months and 27 days old on March 14, 2026, and turns exactly 31 the next day.

Leap year birthdays

Anyone born on February 29 sees the actual date only every four years. In other years many places treat March 1 as the legal birthday, and this calculator uses that convention.

Life statistics

Besides years, months and days, your age is turned into total days, hours and weeks. The figures can be eye-opening: a 30-year-old has lived more than 10,950 days.

How Your Exact Age Is Calculated

A step-by-step look at calendar-aware age arithmetic.

Calculate Completed Years

First, full years are counted — a year only counts once the birthday has come round. Born March 15, 1995 and checking on September 26, 2026, you have 31 full years, because the March 2026 birthday has passed.

Calculate Remaining Months

Next come the complete months since the last birthday. From March 15 to September 15 is 6 complete months.

Calculate Remaining Days

Last, the remaining days after that month: September 15 to September 26 is 11 days. Altogether: 31 years, 6 months, 11 days.

Age in Different Time Units

Your age in months, weeks, days, hours and minutes.

Age in Total Months

Total months = completed years × 12 + remaining months, so someone aged 30 years 5 months has lived 365 total months.

Age in Total Weeks

Total weeks = total days ÷ 7. Eleven thousand days is roughly 1,571 weeks.

Age in Total Days

Every day between the birth date and the reference date is counted, so leap years with 366 days are included exactly.

Age in Total Hours

Total hours = total days × 24, which puts a 30-year-old at roughly 263,000 hours.

Age in Total Minutes

Total minutes = total hours × 60 — for a 30-year-old, more than 15.7 million minutes.

Leap Years and February 29 Birthdays

How leap year birthdays are handled.

How Leap Years Affect Age Calculation

A leap year comes every four years, except century years not divisible by 400, and adds February 29 for a 366-day year. Because every real day is counted, leap years are fully reflected in total-day figures.

What Happens When You Are Born on February 29?

A February 29 birthday falls on its real date only in leap years. The calculator accepts Feb 29 as a birthdate and, in other years, increases the age on March 1, following the most common legal convention.

How Age Is Calculated in a Non-Leap Year

For a February 29 birthday, the age moves up on March 1 in non-leap years. The day count stays exact because real calendar days are counted rather than assuming 365 days a year.

Age Calculation Examples for Real Situations

Age checks for practical everyday scenarios.

Age for School or Admission Dates

Many schools require a child to reach a certain age by a cutoff date (say, 5 by September 1). Put the cutoff in "As Of" and the child's birthdate in the calculator to check.

Age for Forms and Applications

Job, visa and insurance forms often ask for your exact age as of a specific date; enter that date in "As Of" for the precise figure.

Age at a Future Date

Planning ahead? A future "As Of" date shows how old you will be then — for retirement, milestones or eligibility.

Age at a Past Date

Need your age on a historical date? Set "As Of" to that day for the exact answer, useful for legal and medical records.

Why Age Calculator Results Can Differ

Why differences in age calculation methods happen.

Different Month-Length Calculations

Months run 28 to 31 days, so when the birth day is later than the days available in a month, calculators can treat the overflow differently. This one borrows from the last day of the previous month to work out the remaining days.

Leap-Year Handling

Some tools divide by 365.25 days per year as a shortcut. This calculator uses actual calendar dates and counts real days, so leap years are exact rather than approximated.

February 29 Birthday Rules

There is no single rule for when a Feb 29 birthday "happens" in a non-leap year — some systems use February 28, others March 1. This calculator uses March 1.

Different Reference Dates

Age changes daily, so a calculation just before midnight on your birthday eve differs from one just after. This calculator works from midnight (start of day) for every date.
