Time DurationCalculator
Pick a start time and an end time — on the same afternoon or years apart — and this Time Duration Calculator shows exactly how much time lies between them, from years right down to seconds. It reads 12-hour and 24-hour clock formats, follows elapsed time past midnight, and turns every time difference into decimal hours for payroll calculations, work hours tracking, project planning and day-to-day time management.
The Same Span in Other Units

Two watch faces mirror the start time and end time you entered, and the arc between them carries the time duration. Change either input and the hands, gauges and timeline move with it, so you can check the elapsed time at a glance.
What Is a Time Duration Calculator?
A calculator for one question: how long is it from this moment to that one?
A Time Duration Calculator measures the gap between a start time and an end time. Give it two moments — two clock readings, two calendar dates or a full date and time for each — and it reports the time difference in hours, minutes and seconds, plus the larger units when the span runs for days, months or years.
A clock answers "what time is it?". A duration calculator answers a different question — how long passed, or will pass, between two points — and that is the number you need for shift lengths, billing, deadlines and travel.
Because it works with complete date-time stamps, the result stays correct when the span crosses midnight, the end of a month, a leap day or a daylight saving time change. Whether the interval is ten minutes or ten years, the method is the same.
Time duration vs elapsed time
In everyday use, time duration and elapsed time describe the same thing: the amount of time that has gone by between two points. "Duration" is the term used in formal standards such as ISO 8601, where a span is written like PT2H30M; "elapsed time" is the plainer, conversational version.
The distinction that matters is clock time versus time duration. 3:45 PM is a position on the clock; 2 hours 30 minutes is a length. A time difference calculator like this one takes two positions and hands back the length between them.
Time Duration Formula
Every time interval calculation rests on one subtraction. Change the numbers in the panel to watch it work.
Formula for Hours and Minutes
At its core, a time duration is one subtraction:
Duration = End Time − Start TimeFor two times on the same day, rewrite both in 24-hour time, then take the starting time away from the ending time — hours and minutes in separate columns. 17:30 − 09:00 leaves 8 hours 30 minutes.
When the minutes column comes out negative, take one hour from the hours column and add 60 to the minutes. This borrowing step is the carryover method, and it is exactly what the calculator does in its step-by-step calculation — just without the chance of a slip.
Formula for Decimal Hours
Payroll calculations, invoices and work hours tracking usually want decimal hours rather than hours and minutes:
Decimal Hours = Hours + (Minutes ÷ 60)So 7 hours 45 minutes becomes 7 + (45 ÷ 60) = 7.75 decimal hours. A Decimal Hour Calculator does this in one move, and the result panel above already shows the decimal figure next to the normal breakdown. For clock-to-clock totals, the Hours Calculator gives the same number for a single shift.
How to Use the Time Duration Calculator
Four quick steps, all inside your browser — nothing to install and no account to create.
Set the Start
Choose the date and start time with the picker or type them in. The time calculator understands both 12-hour time with AM/PM and 24-hour time, depending on your device settings.
Set the End
Enter the end time, or tap "Now" to use this exact moment. Overnight duration and spans of several days need no special handling — just give the real dates.
Calculate
Press "Calculate Duration". You get years, months, days, hours and minutes, a one-line summary you can copy, and the same span as total minutes, total seconds and decimal hours.
Check the Chronograph
Scroll to the chronograph to see the time duration drawn out: one dial for the start time, one for the end time, and the elapsed time on the bridge in between.
How Time Duration Is Calculated
Behind the scenes, the time duration calculator converts times and subtracts them using calendar-aware arithmetic.
Under the hood, the result is produced in four stages:
- Both the start time and the end time are turned into a full date-time value in 24-hour time, so AM and PM can never be mixed up.
- Each unit is subtracted from its partner — seconds from seconds, minutes from minutes, and so on up to years.
- Any unit that drops below zero borrows from the next larger one — 60 seconds, 60 minutes, 24 hours or a month's worth of days. That is the carryover method.
- Month lengths of 28, 29, 30 or 31 days and the leap year rules of the Gregorian Calendar are applied, so the day count is exact.
Calculating durations across midnight and multiple days
On a 12-hour clock, a time duration that passes midnight looks backwards: a shift from 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM seems to end before it starts, even though eight hours have gone by.
The tool avoids that trap by reading dates as well as clock times — 6:00 AM on 22 June is plainly later than 10:00 PM on 21 June. That is why this Date and Time Duration Calculator gets overnight duration and multi-day spans right without any manual "+24 hours" fix.
Time Formats, Clocks and Standards
How a time is written changes how a time calculator has to read it. These are the conventions worth knowing.
12-hour vs 24-hour time format
The 12-hour clock format counts from 1 to 12 twice a day and relies on AM and PM to tell morning from evening. The 24-hour clock format, often called military time, runs from 00:00 to 23:59 and needs no suffix at all.
This time duration calculator takes either. Before subtracting, it converts everything to 24-hour time, which rules out AM and PM errors — the slip behind most wrong hand-worked answers. The Military Time Converter shows the conversion for any single time.
UTC (Coordinated Universal Time)
Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) is the reference clock the world keeps time against. Every time zone is described as a UTC offset — New York sits at UTC−5 in winter, Tokyo at UTC+9 all year.
GMT (Greenwich Mean Time)
For practical purposes GMT and UTC show the same time. The difference is how they are defined: UTC is kept by atomic clocks, GMT comes from the sun's position over Greenwich. For time tracking and attendance tracking, you can treat them as equal.
Time zones and daylight saving time
Time Zones make a time difference harder to read, and Daylight Saving Time (DST) adds another wrinkle: on the night clocks change, a calendar day lasts 23 or 25 hours. Because this time difference calculator uses your device's time-zone rules, a span that crosses a DST switch is still measured in real hours.
Convert Time to Decimal Hours
Decimal hours make payroll calculations, invoicing and spreadsheet entry far simpler. Here is how the switch works.
Decimal conversion examples
To move from HH:MM format to decimal hours, divide the minutes by 60 and add the result to the hours — a simple time conversion:
| HH:MM | Decimal Hours | Total Minutes |
|---|---|---|
| 1:15 | 1.25 | 75 |
| 2:30 | 2.50 | 150 |
| 4:45 | 4.75 | 285 |
| 7:20 | 7.33 | 440 |
| 8:00 | 8.00 | 480 |
| 0:10 | 0.17 | 10 |
| 9:50 | 9.83 | 590 |
When decimal hours are useful
Decimal hours are the common language of payroll calculations, employee timesheets and billing and invoicing. Accounting tools and spreadsheets multiply them by an hourly rate straight away, with no minute-to-hour step in between.
That is why a Work Hours Calculator or a Time Card Calculator reports this format. Instead of "7 hours 45 minutes" you log 7.75, multiply by the pay rate, and the total is ready.
Add or Subtract Time from a Date
Shift any date and time forward or back by a chosen time duration — find the date 90 days from today, or the clock time 3 hours and 20 minutes ago.
Everyday Uses for a Time Duration Calculator
Time tracking turns up in more places than you might expect — from the factory floor to a wedding plan.
Work hours and payroll
Measure the true length of every shift, convert it to decimal hours and multiply by the hourly rate. A dedicated Work Hours Calculator also subtracts breaks, which takes the guesswork out of payroll calculations.
Employee timesheets
Fill in employee timesheets without arithmetic slips. A Time Card Calculator handles lunch breaks, split shifts and overtime calculation, while the Break Time Duration Calculator takes rest periods off the total.
Project tracking
Time a sprint, the gap between two milestones or the run-up to a launch. Project planning is only as good as its time duration estimates, and a Day Counter Calculator keeps longer phases on track.
Billing and invoicing
Charge clients for the time you actually worked. Turn hours, minutes and seconds into decimal hours, apply your rate, and the invoice adds up. Repeat it for each week of a retainer the way a Weekly Time Duration Calculator would.
Event planning
Count down to a wedding, a conference or a product launch, and work out how long each session or the gaps between them will run. The Date and Time Duration Calculator handles events that last several days.
Study and productivity tracking
Log study sessions, deep-work blocks and Pomodoro rounds to see where the hours really go. Good time management starts with honest time tracking, and measured productivity is easier to improve.

Why Use an Online Time Duration Calculator?
You could work it out on paper. Here is what you gain by letting the tool do it.
Accuracy to the second
Working a time interval calculation by hand goes wrong easily — a missed borrow under the carryover method, a month with 30 days instead of 31. The calculator removes rounding slips and AM and PM errors entirely.
Answers in an instant
A sum that takes a couple of minutes on paper appears here as soon as both times are set. The duration calculator is faster than any manual step-by-step calculation, and you can re-run it as often as you like.
No arithmetic slips
Never forget to borrow 60 minutes again, never mix up AM and PM, and never miscount the number of minutes in a long span. The tool does the carrying for you.
Reads every common time format
Enter times however you have them — HH:MM format, HH:MM:SS format, the 12-hour time format or 24-hour time — and get the answer back as a breakdown, as totals and as decimal hours, without converting anything first.
Common Time Calculation Challenges
These are the pitfalls that catch people when they try to calculate time duration by hand.
Crossing Midnight
An 11 PM to 7 AM shift covers two calendar dates, so plain subtraction gives a negative answer. Because the calculator compares full dates, it returns the correct 8-hour overnight duration straight away.
Daylight Saving Time Changes
In spring an hour is skipped; in autumn one repeats. Daylight Saving Time (DST) turns a normal day into 23 or 25 hours, and this time calculator follows your device's time-zone rules so the real elapsed hours are counted.
Different Time Zones
9 AM in New York is 2 PM in London. Time Zones and UTC Offsets make remote meetings and travel scheduling confusing; the time difference calculator uses your local zone, and the Time Zone Converter lines up two cities.
AM and PM Errors
12:00 AM is midnight and 12:00 PM is noon — the opposite of what many people expect, and the top cause of wrong time difference answers. Working in the 24-hour clock format internally means AM/PM format confusion simply can't happen.

Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to the most common questions about the Time Duration Calculator.
Set a start time and an end time in the Time Duration Calculator at the top of this page and press "Calculate Duration". The start is subtracted from the end and the answer is broken into years, months, days, hours, minutes and seconds. Overnight durations, AM/PM conversion and leap year dates are all handled for you. To do it by hand, convert both times to 24-hour form and subtract, borrowing 60 minutes from the hours whenever the minutes go negative.
Work out the full time duration first, then take the breaks away. The "Add or Subtract Time" panel on this page can remove, say, a 30-minute lunch or two 15-minute rests from the total. Total shift length minus total break time gives net working hours — the same logic the Break Time Duration Calculator applies automatically.
Yes. Because each input carries a date as well as a clock time, a start time of 10:00 PM on Monday and an end time of 6:00 AM on Tuesday produce 8 hours with no extra steps. You never need to add 24 hours yourself to get the right overnight duration.
Divide the minutes by 60 and add the answer to the whole hours: 2 hours 30 minutes = 2 + (30 ÷ 60) = 2.50 decimal hours, and 6 hours 20 minutes = 6.33. The Decimal Hour Calculator panel on this page converts as you type, and the main result always lists the decimal figure. Payroll calculations use this format because it multiplies directly by an hourly rate.
Not quite. Time duration is a length — it answers "how long?". Clock time is a position — it answers "when?". 3:00 PM is a clock time; 2 hours 15 minutes is a time duration. Elapsed time is another name for the duration: the span between two points.
Yes. Enter any two dates, however far apart, and the Date and Time Duration Calculator returns the exact breakdown. It accounts for months of 28, 29, 30 and 31 days, the leap year rules of the Gregorian Calendar and Daylight Saving Time (DST) changes in your time zone. For whole-day counts only, the Days Between Dates Calculator also separates weekdays from weekends.
The calculator works in your device's time zone. For a cross-zone comparison, first express both moments in the same zone using their UTC offsets: with New York at UTC−5 and London at UTC+0, 9 AM in New York is 2 PM in London. The live clock at the top switches between major zones including UTC and GMT, and the Time Zone Converter does the conversion for you.
In practice there is none — both time duration and elapsed time mean the amount of time that passed between a starting point and an ending point. "Duration" is the formal word used by standards such as ISO 8601; "elapsed time" is the everyday phrase, common in schools and in stopwatch apps. This time calculator computes both in exactly the same way.
It is free with no account, no download and no usage cap. Every calculation runs locally in your browser, so the dates and times you enter are never sent to a server. The Time Duration Calculator, the Time Unit Converter and the "Add or Subtract Time" panel can all be used as often as you like.
8 hours is 480 total minutes, because each hour holds 60 minutes: 8 × 60 = 480. The same rule works for any number of hours — 7.5 hours is 450 minutes. You can check it in the Time Unit Converter on this page by converting 8 hours to minutes.
